Eight Years with Terry and Jean

Terry and Jean Strom moved to Texas eight years ago to join Discipleship Unlimited. The Lord has opened doors above and beyond! Many have received freedom and healing through their Christ-centered recovery group at Woodman State Jail.

They both minister in our Faith-Based Dorms, and Jean is attending a seminar to help equip offenders to prepare for the job market. Terry is our worship leader.

We love the joy of worshiping with those behind the fences. Keep Terry and Jean in your prayers as they press on to take the prize ...

Where Are They Now - Betty Gonzales

Meet Betty Gonzales, graduate of the Murray Faith-Based Dorm!

Cleaning Service Mother, six-year-old Joseph Volunteer, Media Team Palo Pinto Cowboy Church Good Samaritan Ministry

Betty arrived at Woodman State Jail on April 22, 2009. She accepted Christ two weeks later. After being assigned to the Murray Unit, she applied for our Faith-Based Dorm program. She had a hunger for the Word and was a key leader.

After 18 months in the program Betty shared at the graduation. Then she was commissioned to minister in the prison population. She was released from prison in July 2011.

Today, she is active in her church and ministers hope to ex-offenders. She spoke at our Reignite Reunion. Even though she has had many adjustments and challenges, her gratitude and passion for Jesus remain constant.

In order to support herself, Betty began cleaning houses. One of her clients sent me an email.

I love to come in and find Betty mopping the floors with a beautiful smile on her face and a praise song on her lips. Her joy and giving spirit are contagious. She spent an entire day cleaning for an elderly person in our community. It was her gift and a beautiful example of sacrificial giving.

And the gift goes on and on and on.

Thank you ministry partners!

God Makes Friends of Enemies

Jennifer is our newest participant in the Hilltop faith-based Dorm and tells this miracle story:

When I was arrested, I was placed in a two person cell with a girl who was my enemy on the streets. Someone handed me a “Karla Faye Tucker Set Free” book. I got on my bunk and quietly read.

After a while, my cellmate asked me what I was reading. I told her and said, “Why don’t you request a copy?” After a long silence she said, “I can’t read.” So I read it to her. We read it together all the way through. Then she asked if I would read it again. So we read it through twice. After we finished it the second time, we were friends. Then she said she’d like to try to read Karla’s story herself, if I could help her to learn to read.

So Jennifer taught her to read, and God made friends of enemies.

Redemption in Indiana Prisons

Linda and Edrena spent some time in Indiana, and this is Edrena's report of their experiences: The Federal Corrections Complex in Terre Haute, Indiana, has maximum-minimum security levels in several different facilities. It also houses death row for men and some of those that are threats to U.S. security. Being a federal facility it is definitely a step up from Texas state prisons generally in many ways. They have a faith-based program with 130 men in which we were able to spend a day.

Linda was able to speak to the U.S. Penitentiary (maximum security) and the Federal Corrections (medium security) on Sunday and tell about her and Karla's story of redemption and forgiveness. She was able to openly share the gospel, and we were able to pray with the men individually. Several received Christ, and others wanted prayer to walk faithfully.

There is no parole to speak of in the federal system, and most of the men are from other parts of the U.S., so they don't receive many visits. Several were from Texas. The chaplains and staff were great!! We do know that there is much more general programming in our units than what is happening there, even though they have eight paid chaplaincy staff for around 3,000 inmates.

On Monday, we toured the faith-based program. It is 18 months, and we will be sharing ideas from it as we process what we can use. They graciously gave us copies of all their curriculum. Linda was able to share the story of forgiveness through Ron Carlson, brother of the lady Karla murdered. It is powerful. We divided into groups with the 130 men and discussed forgiveness. They had never divided into groups like this before.

Since this faith-based group involves any faith, we had Muslim, no faith, Catholic, Protestant and some other faiths there. There was an imam and a retired nun there as mentors as well as the Protestant mentors. Linda did a great job sharing the forgiveness message while speaking under the restrictions of the government. Ron's video spoke much of what we would like to convey for us. The chaplain said these were the best presentations they have ever had.

After this, we were able to share individually with several men and also see some of their classes, including one where they sew hats for kids in hospitals, called Happy Hats. The men gave us a great round of applause as we left them. One of the workers said they had never done this before.

It is only through the prayers lifted up for us and desiring to be faithful to our call and love the ones God has sent us to is this possible. Pray for those men that God's love would transform them and that they would be lights to that place. Also continue to pray for discernment on how to best fulfill our call here.

Not to us, O Lord, not to us but to Your name give glory, because of Your lovingkindness, because of Your truth.

She has shared at the Henderson County Jail and is a leader in Celebrate Recovery. Her desire to help others has spilled over to her career choice. She will graduate in May as a Phi Theta Kappa honor student and begin an internship for Addiction Counseling.

“Everything that the enemy used to try to kill me has become my strength. My life no longer belongs to me. It is His.”

Lori spoke at our Reignite Reunion. Her life scripture is one of the many verses that she held on to while in prison.

Heb. 10:23 Hold fast, without wavering the confession of our hope. For He who promised is faithful.

Freedom in Prison!

How surprising that so often in prison women are set free. In one of our prison chapels the women have put up a banner proclaiming: God’s House of Freedom! Indeed, in that chapel there is freedom in worship, freedom in proclaiming His word and visible evidence of captives being released. What joy to join our Savior in what He is doing behind these fences.

A God-Sized Assignment

When the opportunity came to move this freedom into prison dorms, we accepted the challenge. The team began sowing into the lives of 56 women at the Murray Unit. That was six years ago. There were struggles and tears as we moved our classes into the hot dorms. The officers had to adjust to our presence.

Sometimes we were exhausted. But our team of 20 volunteers continued. As Experiencing God teaches, God had given us a God-sized assignment that only He could accomplish. But He invited us to join Him.

Now we have several hundred women in our Discipleship dorm program and over 200 trained volunteers. Our curriculum includes an Experiencing God weekend. Kathy Diaz and Tom Henderson organize these weekends and invite the volunteers from each unit to participate. God brings together a unity through prayer, teaching, worship and small groups.

I received a letter from Christine, one of the women in the dorm sharing the impact of the weekend.

Excerpts from Christine

Friday was really special for the new girls. Everyone was so excited! The testimonies and preaching were very good. God ordained the small groups and lots of walls came down. The songs were beautiful and the wind carried the music outside our dorm. We saw women walking along praising the Lord with us.

But it was today that really touched my heart. We did not have a Chapel service. Lisa said, “This is the faith based dorm so let’s have our own service.” And we did! We set up chairs and the choir sang. Lisa shared on Mark 8. God was at work around us, and we joined him.

Linda, I never believed how effective a faith-based dorm could be. Though not perfect, I know we are all being changed as we Experience God together. He is so faithful.

Love, Christine

Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy.

Thank you for sowing into this ministry.

Local Church Sponsors Reignite Retreat for Ex-Offenders

After reading Karla Faye Tucker Set Free, Carla Hooton emailed me asking if she could come into prison with Discipleship Unlimited. That was over six years ago, and today Carla is the inside coordinator of the Faith Based Dorm at Hobby. She also has a passion for aftercare. This April, their church under Carla and Randy's leadership hosted the second reignite reunion of faith dorm graduates on the outside of prison walls.

When Randy and I first approached our Pastor about sponsoring a Discipleship Unlimited reunion, he immediately gave us a YES! From there, God orchestrated it all.

Beginning on Friday evening and going through Sunday, our church (First Baptist-Rio Vista) provided an opportunity for faith dorm participants who had been released from prison to come together with faithful DU Volunteers and also church members.

Thirty five ex-offenders gave updates on how God continues to work powerfully in their lives. They lead us in prayer and presented devotions. We had inspirational speakers and meaningful small group times. Church members volunteered to pick up ladies from the church Friday and Saturday nights so that they could shower in their homes since many were "camping out" in our fellowship hall. Love was shared, and believers became bonded.

Our Pastor invited DU to take the Sunday morning service. Our faith dorm women ministered in song and shared a testimony. Linda gave a wonderful message of love and Terry lead all of us in exciting praise and worship. The emotional finale was when the women and some of their guests presented their cardboard testimonies. Awesome!

God was most certainly glorified as there was much worship, healing, and loved shared. We look forward to next year.

God is doing a big work behind these prison walls. And we are seeing the results!
